Description

Product description No Description Available.Genre: Popular MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 10-JAN-2006 .com Youth plus tradition has proven a popular equation, with the same dynamic propelling the teenaged Cottars as launched the careers of Nickel Creek, the precocious Peasall Sisters, and fiddle prodigy Alison Krauss. This young quartet from Nova Scotia's Cape Breton comprises two multi-instrumentalist brother-sister pairs, with Fiona and Ciaran MacGillivray splitting lead vocals, while Roseanne and Jimmy MacKenzie provide harmony and musical support. The material ranges from traditional balladry to a pair of Tom Waits songs, with performances that combine youthful exuberance and a mature virtuosity. Though the instrumental numbers should keep the dance floor filled--as the Cottars apply fiddle, whistle, banjo, and piano to a sprightly selection of jigs, reels, and even a polka medley--the lush, supple vocals of Fiona MacGillivray give the music its emotional depth and resonance. --Don McLeese

They coulda been superstars

I watched the Cottars play with the Chieftains on their 2006 tour to promote this record. Tragically, the group broke up that summer, and the two teenage brother-sister pairs (Roseanne and Jimmy MacKenzie; Fiona and Ciaran MacGillivray), each of which continued to play (the latter under the same "The Cottars" name), couldn't duplicate the magic the four of them had developed over six years of playing together. This record combines traditional Scottish and Irish folk music with some beautiful contemporary songs and showcases the group's multifaceted talents."Forerunner" is a killer record, a lock for a 5-star rating for beauty, musicianship, and originality. When it came out I was certain the Cottars would become huge stars, because in addition to their prodigious talents and excellent musical taste, they were a great-looking and charismatic bunch of kids. I've never seen a proper explanation of the breakup, just bland PR-speak, and I have my own theories, but since they are only in their early 20's I have not completely given up hope of a reunion.

Amazing

I saw these kids live in Kansas City and will buy all of their CDs. These performers are amazing. They are great musicians and singers without regard to their age. I personally liked their first two CDs better because it was more traditional Celtic music, but this CD is still very good. The selection of song writers was surprising, including Tom Waits, but their choices of songs fit them very well.
