English Syntax: From Word to Discourse

The book is very approachable. A rarity in it's kind. Most books on English syntax are dry and formal. A great and interesting introduction to the subject and it clearly shows the limit of formal analysis, pretensions otherwise. To mimic the great Emerson, life is your grammar.

This book is very helpful for those who are learning about English grammar. It excludes a good number of examples as well. It is a good reference book if you have a firm grasp of the English language. (note: this book refers more so to "standard" English and not dialects or other varieties of the English.)

Berk's text is a great resource for anyone trying to get a grasp on English linguistics. She uses several examples so you won't be left guessing what she' trying to say. I frequently refer to it in preparing grammar lessons.

It's a massy Textbook. There are a lot of references written with a pen so that it is hard to concerntrate on while reading. Scraps everywhere.
